Seeking Advice to Master Code_Aster as a Civil Engineering Student

Hello everyone,

I am a second-year Civil Engineering student at IMT Mines Alès, and I have recently started exploring Code_Aster. So far, I can run simple models, but I struggle with more complex ones, especially when dealing with advanced meshing, nonlinear analyses, and debugging errors...

I would love to hear from experienced users—what advice would you give to a student who wants to truly excel and master Code_Aster? Are there specific resources, tutorials, or methodologies that helped you improve?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
As a Professor of Civil Engineering and a user of Code-Aster/Salome-Meca, I would like to tell you the following, which is based on my experience and learning over the years.

It is a must to strengthen the Basics of Finite Element Method (both linear and non-linear FEA) before we venture into using any Finite Element Tool. Proper use of any tool needs the knowledge of its strengths, limitations and common pitfalls.
Be clear about the assumptions and objectives of your FE analysis. Some basic mechanical checks like global equillibrium of forces/moments etc should always be done after the analysis. If possible compare the FEA results with analytical /closed for solution.
Refer to J. P Aubry's books which are freely available (https://www.jean-pierre-aubry.ouvaton.org) for having good understanding of Code-Aster as a beginner. Practicing CA/SM as per these books would help you in gaining a concrete footing to build your future complex analyses upon.
CA is a powerful software and do not expect to use it by few clicks like in most commercial softwares (aka clicosophy!). Here the user needs to know what s/he is doing and using it as a blackbox is dangerous. (This is true for any analysis tool) This helps in justifying your analysis in the long run.
